I have had morning bus duty this week, and this means that I stand out in the hallway at a certain spot to monitor students who have been dropped off by the bus or by car. The students sit out in the hallway waiting for the bell to ring. Once the bell rings, the students go to their homeroom teacher's class.

This particular week, my assigned spot in the hallway is with Pre-K on my right, 4th grade on my left, 1st grade on the other side of the hallway facing Pre-K, and 5th grade in front. I'm standing at an intersection of two hallways so I can monitor them all and they have plenty of room to sit on different walls and in both hallways.

I'm learning some of the Pre-K students' names - there's Kyler, Mason, and Harley (Harley's a girl). Kyler brought one of those small plastic kid swimming pools this morning... and told the teacher that he is going to do all sort of tricky dives into it once they have their fun day and the pool has water. He told me that he can do back flips into that pool. Picturing him and others next to him that were going along with him doing dives and back flips into that super shallow plastic pool was just hilarious.

A little later on, a 1st grader got on a role and told me all of this stuff that he can do. I asked him, "Have you ever caught a bear?" He said, "No... but I've killed one." Where? "Up on Windrock with my gun." He then went on to tell me that he can do a belly flop into the pool. I asked, "Can you do a double belly flop?" He said, "Yes ... I can do a back flip and land with a double belly flop."

It seems that I remember a story about a little boy wearing swim trunks, flippers, and a snorkle to school?? or am I imagining that I remember that story? :)

Ahhhhhhh, the sweet good memories... I love the imaginations of the little ones and the things they say and don't realize what they are saying.

I think you have the PERFECT job for you :)

Forgot to say, in 6th grade, I was promoted "sargeant" patrol girl (the girls patroled halls before and after school - had a station and made sure kids didn't run etc) Anyway, in 6th grade, I got the really fun job of "cafeteria duty" - all the kids that got to school "too early" had to go to the cafeteria, another girl and I were up on the stage and had a "bull horn" to give orders to the misbehaving ones. It was so fun! See, I have always been "mean" ;) your mom would say I had practiced giving orders "on her" ;)

It paid to be a good student, you get a lot of good "gigs" - like going to get the milk break trays because you already finished your paper etc....

forgot to say that the patrol boys, were the street crossing guards - they had cool flags on a long stick that said "stop" LOL Lots of us walked several blocks to school. they had the adult patrol ladies on the crossings of major streets, the boys did the "side roads" I guess you know that Goo was a patrol lady when we were in jr high - you have probably seen her picture in the basement den.

OH - and we all had these strap gizmos to pin our badges on. Gene would have been jealous :) I wish people took lots of pictures back then... I don't think there are any pictures of us as patrol girls - I think your mom was one, perhaps after I had gone on to jr high and she was still in elementary... I'm pretty sure.
